We had our first training session yesterday. It went very well and I'm confident that with continued sessions we will have a very well behaved bassett!
He is doing wonderful. Eating well (of course), sleeping well, his last vet appointment was good too. He is nearing the 30lb mark. Everyone that meets him falls in love with him.
Funny story - We have a beach place out in Bethany, DE and we are there most of the summer... We decided to take Elvis with us one morning up to Rehoboth Beach so that my husband could run on the boardwalk. Thought it would be nice to take him with us and he could stroll the boardwalk with myself and Melinna in her stroller. Well, to make a long story short, we could not take but about 10 steps at a time because everyone had to stop and pet Elvis. What made it so funny was that each time someone walked up to him he rolled over onto his back. So, there we were, not making much progress down the boardwalk - and he got so pooped out so quickly that I ended up having to carry him back to the car. I'm sure it was such a sight... all those people who had stopped to say hello were now heading in the other direction - all of them knew his name - calling out - saying bye bye. It was too cute. Lesson learned on my part - never take a baby basset out unless you want stopped every few yards!
Hope all is well with your family of bassetts!

I am pleased to report that Beau graduated from a basic obedience course. It was a seven week program, and he was one of six dogs in the class.
On graduation night the dogs had to display all their training: sit and stay, lie down and stay, come when called, heel, shake a paw, and an extra trick. For Beau's trick we taught him to "find the treat" from one of our closed fists.
He would smell both fists and then hit the "correct" one with his paw to earn the treat.
Beau was the top scoring dog on graduation night, and he earned a blue ribbon for his prize.
What did I learn from all this? Bassets are very intelligent, but they are a bit aloof. Beau would quickly learn the skill once I had his attention. A good supply of treats was essential in keeping his attention.
Beau was very good around the other dogs. He never showed any agression, and he was quite friendly to the other handlers.
Have a great summer!

Duncan is so happy and we are so happy with him!! He Is the best dog, he loves to play fetch and is very affectionate. He is so funny because every time we get him a new chew toy or stuffed squeaker, he chews it up until all of the stuffing is out and then he bury's it behind our couch cushions. I have attached some pictures of him. I will send more at halloween and when we have our family picture taken.

Hazel is doing wonderful.. She had her hernia removed about three weeks ago and recovered quickly. She has a best friend named Oscar (our youngest cat) They love to stir up trouble together :). She's an amazing puppy, has her "daddy" wrapped around her finger. Here is a pic to let you see how big she's getting.

I wanted to let you know Ninja is doing great. She is completely healthy and growing like a weed.
Also, I wanted to share some news that I thought might make you proud. At our workplace there was a 'Pet Idol' contest for the benefit of charity. We entered a picture of Ninja and she beat out 98 other pets. Over $2,500 was raised for charity with Ninja gaining the most votes. I think she's letting the success go to her head a little bit, and Kimchee is a little jealous, but we're still proud of her. A couple people have asked where we got her and we passed along your information.
Hope all is well, and good luck with your upcoming litters. Merry Christmas!
Regards,
Tony and Tina

Below are pictures of Eloise with my other dog (the beagle, Riley) and my sister's dogs, Albert and Emma. She is a WONDERFUL puppy and we love her to pieces (she is very interested in the Christmas tree, unfortunately, and takes down the ornaments as fast as she can :) ). She had her pre-op appointment for her spay yesterday and she weighs 35 pounds!! Thank you so much for such a great puppy!!

Just wanted to send some new pictures of Eloise to show you how big she's gotten! At her last vet visit for a nail trim she weighed 45.4 pounds!! I recently had to buy her a Large size harness (there was a Rottweiler on the tag)...we are in awe every day at her size. She still acts 100% like a puppy...she has no idea how big she is when she jumps on me while I'm sleeping, or hops onto the couch on top of my 80 year old grandmother! (who still loves her anyway!)
Thank you thank you thank you for SUCH a wonderful puppy! She has her moments, but I wouldn't trade her for the world :)

I am so sorry to hear about Annie and her puppies. I know how much you love your dogs, which is why I was so happy to adopt Beau from you and Robin.
Beau has brought a great deal of joy into our lives. From stealing hats to letting little girls hug him, he brightens every day for us. I hope the happiness Beau and your other dogs have brought families is some consolation to you.
You are in our thoughts,
Joe

Everything is wonderful. I've been pretty busy with Boudreaux these last few days. He is eating extremely well and does not whine at night. He seems to have adjusted very quickly. He is going to the doctor on Friday and I'll give you an update soon. Thanks for everything. We are in-love with him. His AKC name will be King Boudreaux of Chesterfield.

Oliver & Quinn had there 9 week check ups today!DeNae (Dr Babbitt) was thrilled at how healthy they were - she said Hat's Off to the breeder!Oliver is too chunky though -- so we are going to cut back his food a little. Quinn's size was perfect.Oliver weighs 11 pounds and 4 ounces.Quinn weights 8 pounds even. They got shots, worming and started on their heart worm preventative (Sentinel). EVERYONE at the vets office had to come by and get kisses! :o) Hope you all are doing well!Tanya Bickford Concrete Works, LLC

We've been going through a bathroom remodeling project, and I wanted to let you know that Beau has become a big hit with our contractors. He'll sit and watch the men cut tiles and try to steal hats and tools whenever something is left unguarded. Beau also likes to sit next to the contractor's van. All the men love petting him as they go back and forth from the van to the house.
One day the wife of one of workers came to pick him up. The man's six year old daughter was in the car, and when she saw Beau sitting on the grass she begged her mom to let her get out and pet him. I said it was fine. Beau was super with the little girl. He let her pet him and wagged his tail happily. The little girl gave him a big hug. It was precious to see.
Beau has such a great disposition. He loves meeting new people and is especially good around children, even little ones.
I look forward to fall and cooler weather. Beau and I will be able to resume our afternoon walks then.
I hope you and Robin are well.

Tell my parents I'm doing great. I really like my family. Joe comes down in the morning and sits with me on the couch. He rubs my belly for a few minutes before starting his chores. He tells me it helps start his day off on the right foot (paw?). After breakfast I ride in the car with Jay and Alex to go to their school. Once they're gone, Joe and I go for a walk on one of the walking trails around town. I usually meet other dogs, and most people pet me and tell me how handsome I am. When I get home I take a mid morning nap. Joe goes out for a few hours, either to work in his small vineyard or run errands. He comes home for lunch. Now that the weather has turned cooler, we go out for an early afternoon walk. Joe takes me down to the neighbor's farm. I know all the workers there. They pet me and give me Milk Bones. I like sniffing around, and I say hello to my farm dog friends, Butch and Monster. Joe leaves me at home when it's time to pick up the boys at school. When they get home they play in the yard with me until it's supper time. This is my favorite time of the day. Joe usually adds a treat to my supper. The other day he made spare ribs and he gave me a couple. Before going to bed I enjoy sitting with Betsy in the sun room. She likes to read the paper. I sit by her side and chew my bone. I curl up on the couch about 8:30 P.M. My family gives me hugs and kisses before they turn in.
Tell mom and dad I'm very healthy and happy. Joe even found me a vet who comes to the house! She drives a big RV customized for her practice. She told me I was in great shape.
Take care,
Love Beau

Sam, your family misses you very much. You were a beautiful basset just like your mother Annie.

I cannot tell you what a great blessing Abby is. She has become our shadow, here and the cats have been playing together and she is such a happy baby 99% of the time. I will send more pictures when we are not to busy playing to take them! When she is awake she is either in full gear playing or helping us with the house work (her version of help that is)
I cannot say enough to others about you and the care that you take in breeding and the way you baby them until they are picked up. We could not have ask for a sweeter little girl.

Thought you might like a couple of pictures of Murphy. I'm afraid the quality is not great, they were taken with a camera phone in the kitchen tonight. To me he looks like a perfect cross between Ozzie and Gracie, even down to his coloring. He is an amazingly good looking basset, and gets compliments wherever he goes.
He went for his neutering follow up appointment today and weighed in at 41.6 lbs. He is in perfect health and is a favorite at the vet and a bit of a celebrity at PetSmart. Apparently they don't see a lot of bassets come through and he usually has a line of employees waiting to play with him!
Potty training has been a bit of a struggle, but he is getting there. Behavior-wise, he is what you would expect of a 6 month old puppy. He has a particular fondness for toilet paper.
However, he is very smart, and sits and lays down on command, and waits for his supper until he is told "OK." The "basset stubbornness" seems to only apply to the potty training and not the behavioral training.
He gets along very well with both of the cats, and the bigger one likes to taunt him into playing. The bigger cat still rules the roost, mainly because he can jump out of the way!
I hope you are Robin are well, and having a good holiday season. I know that Robin was having some health issues, and I hope that is better also.
Take care!

It has been awhile since I have sent you a Fred picture. He is growing up!! Full of energy and wraps his paws around our necks like he is giving big hugs!! He is very settled into the family and has even made his "bed" right in between me and my husband...that is where he sleeps most nights. He barks and howls when we come home and cries when anyone leaves a room. My mother comes over most days and picks him up so he can spend the afternoons at "Meme's"!!
This picture was taken in my husband's work shop. Fred was hanging out with him sitting in "his" chair by the wood stove!!
